When hiring someone to work on your property, make sure that the individual / company is properly LICENSED & INSURED to do the work they are doing. Not verifying this information puts you at great financial risk.
The State of Florida's Construction Industry Licensing Board (CILB) requires that every contractor be properly licensed and insured before contracting to build or remodel. Candidates for licensing are required to pass state and federal criminal background checks, prove financial responsibility, take and pass written exam(s), and provide proof of their experience in the trade. Licensed contractors must carry general liability insurance AND worker's compensation insurance or valid exemption certificate. Licensed contractors are required to take continuing education classes in order to maintain their license in good standing.
Contracts with unlicensed contractors are unenforceable. Additionally, it is a FELONY to contract without a license. Hiring an unlicensed contractor puts you at great risk.
"HANDYMEN" are not exempt from theCILB requirements. There is an endless number of "handymen" out there working illegally without licensing or insurance. By hiring an unlicensed individual, you are inviting someone onto your property that has not been screened by the state - no background check, no experience verification, no insurance, etc. This puts you and your family at risk.
People that claim to "work under a licensed contractor" and do not have a Qualified Business License are NOT LICENSED and working illegally. Even subcontractors must abide by the rules and regulations of the CILB.
